picture:Ranger Marceia Holland and Golden Eagle Recently at Grayson Highlands State Park, a research of the migration of the Golden Eagle took place. The Rangers and Researchers captured this young Golden Eagle to study and tag the bird for future study on how they migrate from Canada to places in the United State (in this case to the high mountains of Southwestern Virginia). The golden girl holding the Golden Eagle is Marceia Holland, a hard-working dedicated ranger at Grayson Highlands State Park, who has written an article on the migration of the Golden Eagles which can be found on Virginia State Parks web-site and Miss Marcie is a wonderful friend who was once my boss. After the study in which left the bird unharmed, it was released in the wilderness area from which it was captured.

Male Cardinal Winter has finally struck Southwest Virginia. The Robins have been singing their little hearts out for about a month, the Easter Lilies have been blooming, and the Tulips are up and trying to bud~ now winter is here. But better now than April, May or June. It is always good to have some snow in the winter~it is good for the ground for it puts nutrients into the soil that the hay fields, pastures and gardens will need for the new growing season.

Picture: Garley Henderson Hood Making Applebutter the old timey way. 1 bushle Winesap apples or tart apples, peeled an cored 25 pounds white sugar 1 large bag cinnamon candies 2 teaspoons cinnamon oil red food coloring (optional) Build fire outside with dry hickory wood. (Don't let wood touch kettle.) Pour apples into copper kettle placed over wood fire. Cover apples with water. May have to add more water, depending on juice in apples. Stir constantly with wooden ladle. Cook 3 to 5 hours. When apples reach an applesauce stage, add sugar, cinnamon candy, cinnamon oil and red food coloring. When apples leave a trail beding the ladle and has a slick finish, it is done. Pour into either pint or quart mason jars. Seal with ring and lids. (Many people omit the cinnamon candies, oil and coloring, perferring a more natural applebutter.) A lot of hard work, but well worth it in the end.
